Texture Is Why One Drywall Repair Vanishes and Another Does Not
Homeowners usually judge a drywall repair by whether the wall is flat. Flat is necessary and it is not sufficient. The eye is extraordinarily good at spotting a change in surface pattern, and a smooth drywall patch on a knockdown wall is visible from the far side of a room the moment afternoon light comes in sideways. Everything expensive about a good drywall repair happens in the last two hours, and most of it is texture.
Columbia makes drywall texture matching harder than average because the housing stock is so mixed. With 30,676 homes built before 1980 and another 31,000 or so since, a single street can carry three eras of drywall finish, and a single house often carries three of them too: smooth in a renovated kitchen, knockdown in the living room from a 1990s redo, and original stomp on the hall ceiling. A drywall repair in the hallway and a drywall repair in the kitchen of the same Shandon house are two different texture problems.
The Drywall Textures You Will Actually Meet in Columbia
- Knockdown. Sprayed splatter, left to set for a measured number of seconds, then flattened with a wide blade. The commonest wall texture in the 1980s and 1990s drywall stock through Irmo, Seven Oaks, Woodfield and Lexington. Forgiving to match, unforgiving on timing.
- Orange peel. Sprayed and left alone, a fine stipple. Very common on newer drywall out toward Blythewood, Chapin and Lake Carolina. The easiest texture to match well, and the one that makes a small drywall repair cheapest to hide.
- Stomp or crow's foot. Compound rolled on then struck with a stiff brush. Widespread on 1960s and 1970s ceiling drywall. The pattern is a signature of the hand that made it, so the match is built on a board and judged from a normal viewing distance.
- Popcorn or acoustic. Sprayed aggregate. Common on ceilings through the same era. Matching is possible, but a drywall repair in popcorn is genuinely fussy work.
- Skip trowel and Spanish lace. Hand-applied, highly individual. Honest answer: a close match at viewing distance, and sometimes a recommendation to re-texture the whole drywall surface instead.
- Level 5 smooth. No texture at all, a skim coat across everything. The most demanding drywall finish there is, because with nothing to hide behind, every flaw in the drywall repair is visible.
What Texture Matching Adds to a Drywall Repair Bill
On a small drywall repair the match typically adds $50 to $150. That is not a markup on a tin of compound. It buys the sample boards, the time spent adjusting the mix and the pressure, and the return trip that texturing usually forces, because the drywall repair underneath has to be dry and sanded flat before any pattern goes over it.
It is also the line item that cheap quotes remove, and removing it is exactly why a cheap drywall repair looks wrong. Ask any drywall contractor quoting your job to price the texture match separately, so you can see whether it is in there at all. On a knockdown or stomp wall, a drywall repair quoted without a texture line is not a cheaper version of the same job. It is a different job with a visible patch at the end of it. How the Drywall Texture Match Is Built
- Identify it. A light held flat against the drywall throws the pattern into relief and tells you which family of texture you are dealing with and how heavy it is.
- Prime the drywall repair. Bare compound and old paint drink very differently. Texture goes over primer so it behaves the same across the whole drywall repair.
- Spray a sample board. A scrap of drywall gets the same primer, the same mix, the same tip and the same pressure. Then a second board with the mix thinned or thickened, and a third if needed.
- Hold it up in your light. Against the actual drywall, in the actual light the room gets, at the distance people actually stand.
- Apply and blend. The matched texture goes on the drywall repair and feathers out into the surrounding drywall so there is no hard boundary.
- Prime again and hand it to the painter. A textured drywall patch left unprimed flashes through the topcoat even when the pattern is perfect.
The Limit Worth Stating Out Loud
On some hand-applied drywall textures a perfect match does not exist, and any drywall contractor who promises one is guessing. What is achievable, and what should be promised, is a drywall repair that is invisible from normal viewing distance in the room's own light. Where that is not achievable, the right advice is to re-texture the whole wall or ceiling and get a uniform drywall surface rather than an excellent patch surrounded by a slightly different field. Being told that before the work starts is worth more than being told it afterwards.
